How Stitching With Saadgi Transforms Your Punjabi Suits
Have you ever bought a beautiful Punjabi suit online, only to find that it doesn’t fit quite right when it arrives? The neckline gapes slightly. The sleeves are a touch too long. The length doesn’t fall where you’d hoped. It’s frustrating—especially when you love the design but the fit just isn’t there.
This is where Stitching With Saadgi comes in.
Based in the UK and specialising in Punjabi suits, traditional dresses, and ethnic wear, Stitching With Saadgi has been helping women across the UK look and feel their absolute best in their favourite outfits. We don’t just alter suits—we transform them. We take a garment that’s almost right and make it perfectly right. We understand that a Punjabi suit isn’t just clothing; it’s a connection to culture, tradition, and personal style.
In this post, we’d like to share our process with you, explain what makes our service different, and show you exactly how we work with clients to achieve stunning results.
Our Story: Why We Do What We Do
Stitching With Saadgi was born from a simple observation: women in the UK love Punjabi suits, but finding a tailor who truly understands them is difficult. Many general tailors approach Punjabi suit alterations like they would approach any other garment—without understanding the cultural significance, the specific ways these suits are meant to fit, or the best techniques to preserve their beauty.
We recognised a gap in the market and decided to fill it. Our tailor brings years of hands-on experience working with Punjabi suits, bridal outfits, traditional dresses, and religious garments. We understand not just how to alter a suit, but how to enhance it—making sure that when you wear it, you feel confident, comfortable, and absolutely beautiful.
Whether you’re preparing for a family gathering, a religious ceremony, a wedding, or simply updating your everyday wardrobe, we approach your garment with care, expertise, and a genuine commitment to exceeding your expectations.
Our Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Your Consultation – We Listen, Really Listen
When you first get in touch with Stitching With Saadgi, we don’t rush into measuring and cutting. We start with a conversation.
During your initial consultation (either in person at our studio or via WhatsApp), we ask detailed questions about your suit, your body, and your vision. What’s your concern? Is the neckline too loose? Do you want the suit shorter? Are you worried about the fit around the bust? Are you preparing for a specific occasion? Do you have any cultural or religious preferences about how the suit should fit?
This consultation is crucial because it helps us understand not just what needs to be changed, but why. A client might say, “I want it shorter,” but during conversation we discover they actually want it to sit differently proportionally, or they need it shorter because of religious preferences. Understanding the “why” helps us make recommendations that truly serve your needs.
We also ask about any areas of concern with the current fit. Sometimes clients don’t realise that what they perceive as one problem might be solved by addressing a different area. For instance, if a sleeve feels uncomfortable, it might not just be the sleeve length—it could be the armhole depth or the shoulder width. Our experience helps us identify the root cause.
Step 2: Precise Measuring – Where Accuracy Matters
Once we understand what you’re looking for, we measure your suit with meticulous care.
We measure:
Shoulder width and depth
Armhole size and depth
Sleeve length (from shoulder seam to desired wrist position)
Bust, waist, and hip circumference
Overall length of the kameez (from shoulder to desired hem)
Neckline circumference
Salwar inseam and waist
Any other measurements relevant to your specific needs
Importantly, we measure whilst you’re wearing the suit in a relaxed, natural position. We don’t ask you to stand unnaturally or suck in your stomach. These measurements reflect how the suit will actually fit in real life, when you’re moving, breathing, and going about your day.
For suits with heavy embroidery or beadwork, we also assess the weight and drape of the fabric. Embellishments can affect how a garment hangs, so we account for this when determining how much to take in or let out.
Step 3: Pinning & Visual Approval – Seeing is Believing
Before we make any permanent changes, we pin your suit to show you exactly how it will look after tailoring.
We’ll fold the excess fabric and secure it with pins, allowing you to see the proposed neckline, sleeve length, overall length, and fit. This is your opportunity to approve the proposed changes or ask for adjustments. Can you see exactly what we’re planning? Does it look right to you? Would you prefer the neckline a bit looser or tighter? Should we shorten more or less?
Many of our clients tell us this step is invaluable. Seeing the changes pinned on the actual garment, rather than just hearing a description, gives you complete confidence in what’s about to happen. And if you’re uncertain about anything, we discuss it until you’re completely happy.
For embellished suits, we pay particular attention during pinning to ensure any changes we make will work harmoniously with the existing decorations. We might mark out how we’ll work around beadwork or sequins, showing you exactly how we’ll preserve the embellishments whilst making the alterations you need.
Step 4: Expert Stitching – Precision Meets Care
Once you’ve approved the pinned fit, we begin the stitching work.
Our approach to Punjabi suit tailoring is methodical and careful. We don’t rush. We understand that each stitch contributes to the final result, and we take pride in creating seams that are straight, even, and secure.
For different types of adjustments, we employ different techniques:
Seam Adjustments: If we’re taking in or letting out seams, we carefully unpick existing stitches, adjust the fabric, and re-stitch using strong, even stitches that match the original construction.
Neckline Work: Neckline adjustments require precision. We either adjust the binding or reshape the seam itself, ensuring the neckline sits comfortably and looks finished.
Sleeve Adjustments: Sleeves are carefully shortened or lengthened from the hem rather than the armhole (unless armhole adjustment is needed), preserving the sleeve’s original shape and any decorations near the cuff.
Hemming: We hem the suit so the stitches are nearly invisible from the outside, using a stitch type that’s appropriate for the fabric weight.
Embellishment Work: If we need to work around embroidery or beadwork, we do so with extra care, often hand-stitching to ensure we don’t damage any decorations.
Throughout this process, we regularly step back and assess our work. We check that seams are symmetrical, that the garment is balanced, and that the fit is coming together as planned. If we notice something that could be improved, we address it immediately.
Step 5: Pressing & Finishing – The Professional Touch
Once all stitching is complete, we press your suit professionally.
Proper pressing isn’t just about removing wrinkles—it’s about setting the shape of the garment so it hangs beautifully. We use appropriate heat settings for your fabric type and carefully press seams, darts, and the overall garment to restore its intended shape.
For embellished suits, we pay extra attention during pressing. We might press the inside of the garment first, or use a pressing cloth to protect delicate beadwork and sequins. We never press directly onto embellishments, as this can damage them.
Once pressing is complete, we do a final quality check. We inspect the seams, hems, and overall fit one more time. We check that everything is secure, that all loose threads are trimmed, and that the suit is ready to be your new favorite outfit.
Step 6: Your Final Fitting – Seeing the Transformation
You return to collect your suit, and this is where the magic happens.
You try on your newly tailored Punjabi suit, and suddenly it fits. The neckline sits perfectly. The sleeves fall to exactly the right length. The length is proportional and flattering. The fit through the bust and waist is comfortable and elegant. You move in it, and it moves with you.
This moment—when our clients see their suit transformed—is why we do what we do. The relief, the confidence, the joy in realising that a suit they loved but couldn’t wear is now perfect—it’s incredibly rewarding.
During your final fitting, we ensure you’re completely happy. If there’s anything you’d like adjusted further, we can make those changes. We want you to leave with a suit that you absolutely love and can’t wait to wear.
What Makes Stitching With Saadgi Different
Specialist Experience with Punjabi Suits
Unlike general tailors who handle all types of garments, we specialise in Punjabi suits and ethnic wear. This means we understand the specific construction methods, fabric behaviours, and fitting standards for these garments. We know that a Punjabi suit should fit differently than a Western dress, and we apply that knowledge to every project.
Care with Embellishments
Many of the Punjabi suits we work with feature embroidery, beadwork, sequins, mirrors, and other decorative elements. We have extensive experience working around these embellishments, preserving them during alterations, and even enhancing them if needed. We don’t treat embellished suits with apprehension—we handle them with skill and confidence.
Cultural Understanding
We understand that Punjabi suits carry cultural and often religious significance. We approach your garment with respect for that significance. If you’re preparing a suit for a religious ceremony, we understand the importance of modesty and comfort. If you’re wearing it to celebrate your heritage, we understand that fit reflects how you feel about your identity. This cultural awareness informs every decision we make.
Honest Communication
We don’t oversell or oversimplify. If an alteration will be complex or time-consuming, we tell you. If we think a different approach would work better than what you initially requested, we explain why and present options. We believe in being transparent about timelines, costs, and what’s realistic for your specific garment.
Personal Attention
We work on an appointment basis, which means you’re not just a ticket number in a busy shop. We take time to really listen to your needs, to show you every step of the process, and to ensure you’re happy with the result. You know who your tailor is, and we know you and your preferences.
Commitment to Quality
We don’t rush jobs. We understand that a well-tailored suit is an investment—both financially and emotionally. We’re committed to delivering workmanship that justifies that investment, with strong seams, neat finishes, and careful attention to detail.
The Types of Work We Do
Full Stitching from Fabric
If you have beautiful fabric but no suit yet, we can stitch a Punjabi suit from scratch. You provide the measurements, design preferences, and fabric, and we create a suit tailored perfectly to your body and style.
Alterations & Size Adjustments
Whether you need sleeves shortened, the bust taken in, the length adjusted, or the neckline refined, we handle all standard alterations. For ready-made or previously worn suits, alterations are our bread and butter.
Re-Styling & Updates
Have an old Punjabi suit you love but haven’t worn in years? We can give it new life. We might adjust the neckline to a more contemporary style, take in or let out the fit to suit your current size, or update the length. What was once out of favour can become a favourite again.
Complex Embellished Work
Heavily embroidered or beaded suits require specialist care. We’re not intimidated by complex embellishments. We work carefully around them, and if adjustments are needed in embellished areas, we hand-stitch to ensure the decorations remain secure and beautiful.
Trouser & Sleeve Changes
Beyond the kameez, we also alter salwar (Punjabi trousers), sleeves, and other components of your suit. We can adjust waist, length, and fit to ensure every part of your suit is comfortable.
Specialist Work for Religious Garments
We tailor gatra (the undergarment worn in Sikhism), kachhera (Sikh undergarment), and chola/chole (traditional Sikh dress). These garments require understanding of their cultural and religious context, which we approach with respect and expertise.
